Biography of Penny Li, MBA, MPA

Penny was born and raised in China. She successfully completed her transformation in the U.S. from an international student to a working professional with two master’s degrees and a life coaching certification. She has over 10 years of leadership experience in higher education with advanced knowledge and extensive practice in academic consulting, admissions coaching, career coaching, and life coaching. Her expertise is to help students as well as young working professionals especially those who are new to the American culture, not only achieve their goals faster, but also thrive in the U.S. based on her years of coaching and consulting experience with students of different nationalities, backgrounds, and ethnicities. 

Penny has been actively participating in community events to support schools, young professionals, and non-profits and to bridge and enhance Sino-American friendship and mutual understanding between Eastern and Western cultures. She lectures on How to Thrive as an International Student in universities and professional conferences. She serves as a board member of two non-profit organizations in California and is a well-known Emcee in the Chinese community in Los Angeles.

Penny's hobbies include playing the piano and spending time with her cockatiel, Fluffity, who loves to cuddle.

Biography of Michael Cortrite Ed.D.

Dr. Cortrite has been studying leadership as a practitioner and as an academic for over 35 years. He specializes in life coaching and leadership coaching.

As a practitioner he worked for over 30 years in a Los Angeles area police Department as a police officer, supervisor, and manager. In 1981 he was promoted to a supervisory position and this started his lifelong quest to understand leadership and human motivation.

As an academic he has been a professor for the last 22 years and earned his Doctor of Education in Leadership from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He currently teaches classes in leadership and management in the Masters of Business Administration program at the California Institute of Advanced Management.

His doctoral dissertation was on servant leadership and he has continued his research in this area. He also is researcher for the Management as a Liberal Art Research Institute (MLARI) at the California Institute of Advanced Management.



Dr. Cortrite is a certified life coach from Life Purpose Institute (LPI), an International Coaching Federation (ICF) approved school.
